# Cold Spot Dave and the Pharmacist Have a Standing Crossword Date

Gus Lindqvist has run the Main Street pharmacy for thirty-one years. Dave has kept its refrigerator cold for four of them.

*We sat down with Gus Lindqvist, who has owned the Main Street pharmacy for thirty-one years, and Cold Spot Dave, who guards its vaccine refrigerator at night. Dave answered in the usual way, with a gentle change in temperature. Mr. Lindqvist translated.*

**How did this start?**  
Gus: A cold spot appeared beside the vaccine refrigerator one night and stayed. I assumed it was a draft. Then I checked the temperature log. It was exactly the refrigerator’s temperature, to the decimal. I have never trusted a piece of equipment so much.

**Dave, what do you like about the work?**  
Dave (the room dropped one degree, kindly): He says the work is steady, and that he has never once been tempted to go colder than the refrigerator.

**And the crossword?**  
Gus: Before I lock up on Saturday I leave the puzzle on the counter, with a pen. When I come in on Monday, three clues are filled in, in a hand like frost on a window. They are always the right three. I leave a cup of tea beside it. He can’t drink it, but he likes the steam.

**What happens when someone tries the back door?**  
Gus: Dave raises a draft to neck height, and the person decides it’s the wrong building. He leaves, and the door never opens. In the morning there’s a note in the log: *Intruders: 1. Departed: 1.* I keep every one in a folder.

**Anything you’d like to say to each other?**  
Gus: Thank you, Dave.  
Dave: (the room became briefly, kindly, three degrees cooler.)

**Corrections.** An earlier version of this interview said that Dave cannot drink the tea. He has clarified that he can, but it is a matter of timing.
