# Nobody Watches the Loading Dock After the Last Truck Leaves

The last truck leaves at 6:05 p.m. The bay door rolls down, the forklift is parked, and the lights go off in the break room. Behind the shift lead, the dock is full of pallets, and nobody is watching any of them.

## What a dock looks like at 6:05 p.m.

A loaded dock after the last truck is the quietest expensive room in the building. The pallets are wrapped, counted, and staged for morning. A camera may be recording, but a camera does not stop anything. It files what happened after the fact. That is the trouble with an unwatched dock: it is full of product and empty of people at the same moment, and everyone who drives past knows it.

Nothing about it looks dangerous, which is what makes it easy to overlook. A pallet of product on a quiet dock is just a pallet, right up until it is a line on a loss report.

## How the Lurker does it

The Loading Dock Lurker takes a post at the bay the minute the last truck leaves and does not move until first light. It does not patrol, chase, or shout. It waits. An empty bay starts to feel occupied, because it is. Anyone who walks up to take a pallet finds a cold spot at the door, the sense of being looked at, and a strong wish to be somewhere else. They go. The pallets stay. It is one member of the Horseman's team, and like the rest of the team it arrives on time and does the job quietly.

## What it costs

One soul per dock per year. If you would rather pay in goods, it is one pallet, delivered on time, each quarter. That is the entire price. ## What happens at a dock nobody haunts

The last truck leaves. The door is not quite latched. By morning the pallet count is short by one, or three, or eleven. Nothing was smashed and nothing looks wrong. The product is lost the way coins leave a pocket: slowly, and then you notice. The person who finds the gap at 7 a.m. has no one to ask, because nothing was there overnight to see it. ## What you read the next morning

Every plan includes a plain written Morning Report at first light, quiet night or not. It lists what the night held, in the order it happened, and it ends with a count. If the night was quiet, the report says so. If it was not, it says that too, in plain words with times. Most dock supervisors read the count first.
