# Salt Is Not a Security Plan

Forty pounds of salt, one vaccine refrigerator, and a mop.

MAIN STREET — Two brothers in a very old, very loud car arrived at the pharmacy after dusk with a duffel bag, a notebook, and forty pounds of salt. They had heard the building was haunted. It is. They had not heard that it is haunted on purpose, by professionals, on behalf of the owner.

## What the report said

The brothers salted the doorways, the windows, and, regrettably, the vaccine refrigerator. Cold Spot Dave asked them to stop. They did not stop. Nightmare, our Head of Rapid Response, stood in the parking lot and looked at their car in the way only a horse can.

At 1:05 a.m., the older brother turned around and found the Proprietor standing behind him, headless, holding a mop. The younger brother said, “Sure, why not.” Then both of them ran. They left the salt, the notebook, and the duffel bag, and the car left the lot on two wheels, loudly.

### Outcome

The salt was swept, the refrigerator was wiped, and the duffel bag is in Lost and Found. The pharmacist, arriving at eight, remarked that the floor was cleaner than it had been since March. Salt, we would like to say, is a seasoning. It is not a security plan.

**Corrections.** An earlier version of this article gave the weight of the salt as forty pounds. The brothers have written to say it was thirty-nine, and that the other pound was lunch.
