# The Creature from Room 12 Works for Socks

A budget monster, a motel vending machine, and a very effective two-night shoot.

THE VISTA MOTOR LODGE — This production was shot in two nights on a very small budget, and every dollar is on the screen.

Two men with a hand truck came for the vending machines. They had cased the Vista Motor Lodge for a week and believed the office to be empty at 3 a.m. They were correct about the office. They were not correct about Room 12.

## What the report said

At 3:04 a.m. the hand truck squeaked. At 3:05 a green light came on under the bed in Room 12, which was vacant, and a low sound rose from the carpet like a refrigerator clearing its throat.

The effects were modest. A tentacle, very much of the practical variety, reached out from beneath the dust ruffle. A second tentacle, noticeably cheaper than the first, followed. Then an enormous shadow, cast by a lamp on a ladder held by someone who did not wish to be credited, rose up the wall.

The men, who had come for quarters, left without them. One lost a shoe on the stairs. One screamed in a register that startled the ice machine. The hand truck is still in the parking lot.

The new hire, a Monster Under the Bed in their first week on lodging vacancies, was a professional throughout. The monster emerged only when the room was empty and something was truly amiss, as the job requires, and returned beneath the bed at 3:09 a.m., where they belong.

### Outcome

Vending machines emptied: zero. Intruders departed: two, at speed. Budget: eleven dollars and a lamp. The motel’s night clerk, Priscilla Voss, who has worked there for twenty years, leaves a clean sock outside Room 12 every night. It is always gone by morning. She says whoever it is has good taste.

**Corrections.** An earlier version of this article described the lamp on the ladder as an effect. The lamp has asked to be recognized as a performer.
