He had worked at the Carrow House Inn for eleven summers, and he thought he remembered where everything was. The key cabinet behind the desk. The safe in the pantry. The third stair that gave. He had left in the spring on bad terms, which he told himself were not his terms, and in October he let himself in through the kitchen at a quarter to three.

The inn was dark and smelled of lemon polish and woodsmoke, and for a moment he was twenty-two again, carrying a tray, certain of his own future. This is the difficulty with returning to a place: it returns you.

## What the report said

The Gray Lady was at the night desk, where she has been, in one form or another, since 1823. She did not look up at once. She was finishing a line in the guest register, in a hand so beautiful it seemed to belong to another century.

“Good evening,” she said. “You are expected.”

He had not told anyone. He opened his mouth to say so, and she said it for him, kindly, as one finishes the sentence of a tired child. She named the summer. She named the spring. She named, without cruelty, the thing he had done in March and the thing he had been about to do tonight, and she said that there was a room for him, if he wanted it, at the usual rate, and that the kitchen door was still unlocked, but only on the outside.

He did not stay. He went out through the kitchen, past the safe, past the third stair that gave and did not give for him, and he took nothing he had not brought. In the doorway he turned back. The lamp on the desk was lit. She had returned to the register.

### Outcome

Items taken: none. Intruders departed: one, white to the lips, at a walk that became a run. The innkeeper, Mr. Calloway, found the register open in the morning with a new line in it, in that same impossible hand: *All guests accounted for.* He said he would not change a thing. He has since given the Gray Lady the good chair.

**Corrections.** An earlier version of this article said the third stair “gave and did not give” for the visitor. The stair has asked to be described as discerning.
