# The Old Sea Captain and the Harbor Master Have Heard It All Before

The Captain has seen things that cannot be explained. The Harbor Master has heard them explained. Both agree it is time well spent.

*Harbor Master Nell Takahashi has run the Harborview Marina for twenty-two years. The Old Sea Captain has sat at the end of dock C for slightly longer, and has seen things that cannot be explained. The Captain tried anyway.*

**How did you meet?**  
Nell: I came in one morning at six and there was a figure at the end of dock C, still telling a story. He’d started it at midnight. He was somewhere in the middle.  
Captain: It was a good story, and she listened to all of it.

**Which story?**  
Nell: The one about the lantern. I’ve heard it forty times, and it gets better.  
Captain: The ending changes depending on who is listening.

**Tell us about the bolt cutters.**  
Nell: Two men came onto dock C one night for the outboard motors. The Captain sat down beside them and began to explain. They put the bolt cutters down to listen. When the harbor patrol arrived at four, one of them asked for ten more minutes to hear the ending.  
Captain: They were a very attentive audience.

**What do you do for each other?**  
Nell: I leave a thermos of coffee and a folding chair at the end of the dock.  
Captain: I have never needed the chair. I like that she thought of it.

**Corrections.** An earlier version of this interview said the Captain has told the lantern story forty times. It is forty-one. The forty-first was about the forty.
