The Whiteboard Wraith has erased her strategy diagram every night for two years. They agreed to be interviewed together, on the condition that neither of them be allowed to erase the other.* **Margot, doesn’t it bother you?** Margot: I used to be furious. Then I noticed the version I redrew the next morning was always clearer. The Wraith was, in effect, my editor. **Wraith, what do you erase?** Wraith: The boxes with arrows pointing at themselves. The word “synergy.” Anything marked URGENT with no date. I leave the good ones. **What about the Friday notes?** Margot: Every Friday I write *Thanks* in the corner. On Monday there is a small doodle beside it. Last month it was a tiny horse. I’ve decided not to ask. **Has anyone ever tried to take the roadmap?** Margot: One man came at one in the morning to photograph the whiteboard. The markers began to roll off the tray, one at a time, toward him. He dropped his phone in the aquarium and left without a single photograph. **Last words?** Wraith: Her diagrams have improved. Margot: The editing has improved. **Corrections.** An earlier version of this interview used the word “synergy” four times, in quotation marks.
