# The Yard Hound on Why Nine Hours of Barking Is a Reasonable Workday

An interview with the Yard Hound on fence lines, lumber stacks, and scrap piles, and why a dog that does not exist is the most persistent guard on staff.

The Yard Hound has been on the fence line at an industrial yard since long before the yard had a fence. It agreed to answer six questions on the condition that none of them were about the dog. There is no dog. The Hound was firm about this, and also did not stop barking while it said so.

## Why nine hours of barking?

**Yard Hound:** Because a shift is nine hours and I do not believe in leaving early. A guard who stops at midnight is a guard who started at six. The barking is the product. It tells the fence line, every night, that someone is working.

## What do a lumber yard and a scrap yard have in common?

**Yard Hound:** Neither one can be locked from the inside. There is a gate, but the yard is mostly edge, and the edge is long. Lumber stacks and scrap piles both look the same in the dark: heavy, valuable, and nobody's problem until morning. I take the edge. That is the job.

## What does an intruder do when they look for the dog?

**Yard Hound:** They look for the dog. There is no dog. They look for a bowl, a chain, a doghouse. Nothing. The barking continues from a place they cannot find. By the time they decide it is a recording, they have lost nine minutes and their nerve. I have never seen one come back for the second trip.

**Yard Hound:** The bark does not get louder. It does not need to. It stays exactly the same all night, and that sameness is what people find unsettling. A burglar can plan around an alarm. He cannot plan around something that does not get tired.

## How about the yard next door, the one without you?

**Yard Hound:** I do not like to talk about it. A fence cut in nine minutes. A trailer of copper gone by sunrise. A foreman who arrives to find the gate shut and the pile lighter, and no one to ask what happened. Nothing was there overnight to see it. That is the entire difference between our yard and theirs.

Dolores Achterberg, the yard foreman who works alongside the Hound, puts it more plainly: "I used to count the pile every morning and hope. Now I count it and it is the same number. I did not know how much of my day was worry until it stopped."

## What does it cost?

**Yard Hound:** One soul per yard per year. Or one bone, buried each season. I prefer the bone. Larger sites, with docks, yards, and routes between them, are set out on the [wide-area haunting](https://www.sleepyhollowsecurity.com/wide-area-haunting) page. Read [Nine Hours of Barking, Zero Dogs](https://www.sleepyhollowsecurity.com/blog/nine-hours-of-barking-zero-dogs) if you want the long version of why I do this.

## And the guarantee?

**Yard Hound:** Every intruder runs off empty-handed, or the night is free. Claims are accepted within 30 days. No other security company puts that in writing. Ask them. I will keep barking while you do.
